Then What?

The Victoria University College sponsored Program in Semiotics and Communication Theory is the only such program in North America. Semiotics deals with the study of meaning by postulating that any meaning-bearing message can be broken down into simplest units called signs. Thus, semiotics is the study of signs, searching for the origin of meaning(s); a deeper comprehension of the way we construct, transmit and interpret meaning.

Semiotics is an interdisciplinary study, looking at meaning from different points of view. The Semiotics Program at U of T includes courses from Anthropology, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Philosophy, Psychology as well as other areas. Through such a wide selection of courses you will get an opportunity to study themes from a variety of points of view, acquiring skills and knowledge that will later be useful to you in what ever career path you choose to pursue.

Since Semiotics is not a professional program of study, you should not expect it to lead to a career straight out of university. The program is easily combined with another area of study, or you can pursue it on its own if you are interested in an academic career in semiotics or other branches of Communication Theory. There are many universities, including University of Toronto, which offer advanced degrees in Communication Theory. For further information about your options upon graduation, please go to the "Then What?" section.
