The Vari Scholarship
Through a very
generous donation from the George and Helen Vari Foundation, Victoria
College offers an admission award valued at $10,000 to a student who
plans to pursue a career in teaching at the secondary level in Ontario.

The
Award
The Vari
Scholarship/Bursary was established to encourage secondary students
to seriously consider teaching at the secondary level as a career. Each
year several students entering Victoria College for studies in the Faculty
of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto will receive an admissions
award of $10,000, renewable for three subsequent years, and for an additional
year at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University
of Toronto. (Total value of $50,000). Renewal of the award is conditional
upon the maintenance of a sessional average in the A range (GPA 3.50+).
There are three scholarships available for 2004.
Criteria
- Nominees must demonstrate through extracurricular
activities a genuine interest and commitment to teaching as a profession.
- Nominees must have achieved high academic
standing.
- Nominees must have completed, or intend to
complete, a broad range of courses, and must meet the admission
requirements for the stream of study they intend to enter in the
Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto.
- Nominees must be registered
at Victoria College in the University of Toronto to receive this
award.
- Nominees must complete the financial statement
(part B of application) explaining their financial situation and
must be countersigned by a parent or guardian. Under the terms of
the Vari award, financial need must be demonstrated.
- Nominees must be Canadian
Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada graduating in 2004 from
an accredited Ontario secondary school.
Selection
of Finalists
The Selection
Committee for the Vari Scholarship/Bursary will review all applications
received on or before the deadline of January 16, 2004. Your completed
application must include all four sections of the application (parts
A, B, C, and D) and an official copy of your most recent high school
transcript from the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Approximately 30 finalists
will be invited to write a general knowledge examination to be held
on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Victoria College in Toronto.* The
general knowledge examination is made up of short answer questions,
multiple choice questions, and essay questions.
The candidates
selected to receive the award will be notified in April 2004.
*Note: Victoria College regrets it is
unable to cover expenses for travel to Toronto.
