Hundreds of newly admitted students gathered at Victoria College on March 28, 2026, for the Congratulatory Reception: From Offer to Opportunity, marking the beginning of their academic journey. For many, it was their first step onto the historic grounds, where they met future classmates and imagined themselves as part of a community that has shaped countless lives.
The day started with a welcoming ceremony hosted by graduating students Emma Ward and Logan Xerri, whose reflections on their time at the university offered an honest and heartfelt glimpse into life at Vic. They spoke not only of the academic richness, but of the everyday moments of connection–conversations over coffee, late-night study sessions, friendships forged in residence hallways–that make a university experience truly meaningful.
From courses and extracurriculars to scholarships and cherished student traditions, the event painted a vivid picture of what it means to be a part of the Victoria College community. Professor Alex Hernandez, Principal of Victoria College, encouraged students to imagine themselves at Vic and explore the opportunities that await them here. Dean of Students Kelley Castle highlighted the breadth of clubs and activities available across the University of Toronto–what she calls a “buffet of experiences.” Registrar Yvette Ali spoke about the robust network of support systems designed to help students thrive academically, socially and personally, adding that “opportunities to witness a student’s journey are the most rewarding part of our job.”
Following the ceremony, the day's energy carried over to the Goldring Student Centre, where students were invited to enjoy refreshments and conversation. The room filled quickly with the buzz of introductions, excited storytelling and camaraderie. Future classmates met for the first time while current students shared their own stories. Residence tours offered another glimpse into the future, allowing visitors to walk through spaces that may soon become home.
In the laughter, the thoughtful questions, the communal experiences and moments of recognition between strangers, there was a shared sense of excitement about what lies ahead. For prospective students, the reception gave a taste of the community, support and possibility of what the student experience at Vic looks like for its students.
“We invite all students to accept their offers and begin writing their own Vic story,” says Ali. “The welcoming, vibrant community at Victoria College is what makes days like this possible. Every story that is shared, every hand extended, helps shape the next generation of Vic students.”
