This Earth Day, Victoria University is proud to highlight its ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient campus, aligning with the 2025 Earth Day theme: Our Power, Our Planet.

A wide range of infrastructure improvements have been implemented across Vic's campus in recent years. To improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss, windows have been replaced or refurbished in multiple buildings, including Annesley Hall, the Bowles/Gandier houses and the Lillian Massey and McKinsey buildings.

To support sustainability and enhance building performance, air conditioning upgrades include energy-efficient chillers at E.J. Pratt Library and the Lillian Massey building, new fan coil units in Upper Burwash and Rowell Jackman Hall and an updated energy-efficient air conditioning unit in the Victoria College mailroom.

To further reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency, lighting upgrades have also been a major focus. Energy-efficient LED light retrofits are underway across campus, including exterior lamp posts and stage lighting in the Isabel Bader Theatre. All new electrical fixtures are now specified as LED, and motion sensor lights have been installed where possible.

Additional energy-saving systems include variable speed drives for ventilation and pumps, and building automation for smart scheduling and remote monitoring.

“At Vic, sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a continuous commitment,” says Vikas Mehta, associate CAO, operations, infrastructure and sustainability.

“We have implemented a wide range of energy efficiency initiatives across our campus, all aimed at reducing our environmental carbon footprint and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. In addition, we are making significant strides in waste management, with ongoing efforts to minimize food waste and enhance waste diversion from landfills. This work reflects our dedication to creating a responsible and sustainable campus for future generations.”

Victoria University is committed to sustainability—not just on Earth Day, but every day—by investing in smart, energy-efficient solutions that protect the planet and strengthen our community. Learn more about Victoria University's sustainability efforts.
